There are also four student teachers from Purdue and Valparaiso Univerity with us for the fall semester. Three more student teachers from Valparaiso Universtiy are assigned to McKinley for the spring semester. In addition to the teaching staff there is a 2 day social worker and one full time nurse. Of the thirty-eight sections, nine are bilingual. The teaching staff is a mixture of youth and experience with an average seniority level of 13 years.

The student population comes from a diverse ethnic background. The majority of the students are Hispanic, followed by African-Americans, Caucasians, and Asians.

The McKinley School community has experienced problems common to most urban schools: unemployment, single parent families, changing neighborhood values and mores, and changing housing patterns. McKinley continues to strive to meet the challenges presented by these changes.
