Welcome to McKinley Elementary School home of the Mustangs. McKinley School is
a kindergarten through sixth grade facility. It is the largest elementary school in East Chicago,
sevicing 830 students. The staff includes thirty-nine full-time elementary teachers, one special education pre-school teacher, two special education teachers,
three full time Title I teachers, one T.E.S.O.L. teacher. There are also four student teachers from Purdue and Valparaiso
Univerity with us for the fall semester. Three more student teachers from Valparaiso Universtiy are assigned
to McKinley for the spring semester. In addition to the teaching staff there
is a 2 day social worker and one full time nurse. Of the thirty-eight sections, nine are
bilingual. The teaching staff is a mixture of youth and experience with
an average seniority level of 13 years.
The student population comes from a diverse ethnic background. The majority
of the students are Hispanic, followed by African-Americans, Caucasians,
and Asians.
The McKinley School community has experienced problems common to most urban
schools: unemployment, single parent families, changing neighborhood
values and mores, and changing housing patterns. McKinley continues to strive
to meet the challenges presented by these changes.
