SPECIAL EDUCATION
Converting Fractions to Percentages
Objectives
Students will learn to convert fractions to percentages.
Procedure
1. Write a fraction on the board.
2. Ask students if they can identify the numerator and the denominator. If yes, go to next step. If no, review numerator and denominator.
3. Explain conversion process.
a. Percent means per hundred. 10 percent is just another way of saying “ten out of a hundred,” or ten hundredths. If exactly 10 percent of your 100 M&M’s are yellow, then 90 of them are some other color and 10 of them are yellow.
4. Work an example on the board. Given the fraction 5/8, what is the percentage?
5. Have the students work in pairs. Hand out bags of M&M’s. Assign each pair a color. The pairs will:
a. Count the number of their assigned color of M&M’s and record it.
b. Count the total number of M&M’s and record it.
c. Write the ratio of their color of M&M’s to the total number as a fraction and record it.
d. Convert their fraction to a percentage.
6. Share the results with the class.
7. Thank them for their participation.
8. Assign them practice problems on the board for homework. (Converting fractions to percentages.)
Material
M&M’s, pencils, paper, chart, chalk board, & worksheet
Evaluation
Check understanding by the correct answers in the pairs exercise and the homework assignment.
Standards
7.2.1 - Students solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems that use integers, fractions, decimals, and combinations of the four operations.
