Lesson:  President's Fitness Challenge

Objective - Assess students current fitness level in the areas of muscular strength & endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, speed & agility.  (The same tests will be repeated in the spring to test for individual improvement)

Equipment needed - Student record forms, stop watches, mats, erasures, chin-up bars, measuring tape, "sit and reach" board.

1.    Curl-up

Objective - to measure abdominal strength/endurance by maximum number of curl-ups performed in one minute.

2.  Shuttle-run

Objective - to measure speed and agility.

3.  Endurance run/walk

Objective - to measure heart/lung endurance by fastest time to cover a one mile distance.

4.  Pull-ups and Push-ups

Objective - to maintain flexed arm hang position as long as possible.

5.  V Sit and Reach

Objective - to measure flexibility of lower back and hamstrings.

Homework Assignment

Students will calculate their body mass index (B.M.I.) to estimate their individual body composition - underweight, average, overweight, obese, or grossly obese (see attached).

Standards:

7th grade = 7.4

8th grade = 8.4, 8.6
