Promotion/Retention Policy

             The staff of Block Junior High School believes that all students are capable of achieving academic success through dedication to one’s studies, through consistent effort, and by meeting standards of acceptable performance.  Therefore, the following promotion/retention policy becomes effective as of August, 2003:

 STANDARD #1 – 7^th Grade Students:

  7^TH  grade students are to maintain a minimum 1.4 grade point average (G.P.A) for the five academic subjects of language  arts, math, reading, science, and social studies.  They are also to maintain, a 1.7 minimum G.P.A. for elective subjects that may include art, bilingual education, industrial arts, music, physical education, or Quest.  The combined minimum academic/elective G.P.A. must equal 1.5.

 Using the traditional grading scale of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0, 7^th grade students must accumulate 7 points in their academic subjects and 5 points in their elective subjects for a total of 12 points.

 STANDARD #1 –8^th Grade Students:

 8^th grade students are to maintain a minimum 1.5 G.P.A. for the four academic subjects of language arts, math, science, and social studies.  They are also to maintain a 1.5 minimum G.P.A. for elective subjects that may include art, bilingual education, computer technology, consumer science, health and safety, music, physical education, or reading.  The combined academic/elective G.P.A. must equal 1.5

 Using the traditional grading scale previously described, 8^th grade students must accumulate 6 points in their academic subjects and 6 points in their elective subjects for a total of 12 points.

 STANDARD #2:

 No student will be permitted to receive more than one “F” grade per grading period.

 STANDARD #3:

Promotion to the next grade will be determined by averaging the final grades for the first semester with the final grades for the second semester.

APPEAL  PROCESS

The staff of Block Junior High School recognizes that extenuating circumstances might prevent a student from meeting the standards for promotion to the next grade.  A waiver process, therefore, will be made available to such students.  The school’s Appeals Committee will use the following criteria to determine whether or not to grant a waiver:

 Did the student: 

• Achieve significant G.P.A. improvement during the second semester?
• Demonstrate growth on MAPS testing?
• Attend school consistently?
• Attend tutoring consistently?
• Adhere to the school’s homework policy?
• Adhere to the school’s discipline policy?
• Secure a teacher recommendation?
