HOMEWORK POLICY

Complete homework assignments and improve your grades!

Why is homework important?
For one thing, it helps you to understand thoughts and ideas we discussed in class more thoroughly.

It also gives you an opportunity to review independently what was learned in class.

Doing your homework (and doing it well) on a regular, consistent basis helps you develop a sense of responsibility i.e., you learn that you are the person responsible for what you do or do not do.

You won’t pass this class if you don’t do your homework!!!!

Homework assignments are also a critical part of your grade.
A "zero" on a homework paper can quickly damage your other efforts. Eliminate the potential of "zeroes" by completing all your homework assignments.

Set up a regular study time, so completing your homework will be a habit.

Remember: Not all homework is "written." Reviewing notes, reading, and studying for quizzes and tests are all types of homework. Schedule time for these activities in your homework time.

Missing homework
1. If you miss a homework assignment because you were absent it
must be made up the day following your return to class. NOTE it is
the students responsibility to ask me for makeup homework
assignments.

2. Unless you were absent, as stated above, late homework will not be
accepted.

Mrs. Guernsey

Reading

Objective: Homework assignments in Reading will be given to supplement, reinforce, enrich

And aid in the mastery of specific skills covered in the classroom.

Frequency:   Homework assignments will be given out two or three times weekly.

Procedure: Assignments turned in for credit should be:

1.    Written in composition book or on a separate sheet of paper.

2.    Student's name, subject, date, class period, and title must be on the assignment.

3.    Discussion questions should be answered in complete sentences.

4.    Most homework is due the following class period 9with the exception of an excused absence).

Types: The different types of homework assignments will be:

1.    Worksheets

2.    Vocabulary

3.    Comprehension check questions

4.    Short reports

5.    Book reports

6.    Test corrections

Evaluation: Grade assignment of A, B, C, D, F. or F- (indicates not accepted or not turned in).

Missed assignments will result in a reduction of final grade.

Conclusion: This policy is not only beneficial to the student and parent, but also to the

Instructor as it unifies a process and provides a tool for evaluation.

Room A-125

Dear Students and Parent/Guardian,

I look forward to the 2005-2006 school year and I hope all of you do as well. This is my first year as a teacher, and I couldn’t have picked a better place than Block Junior High School to begin my teaching career. Together we all can work together to keep our school a positive and safe environment for all our students and staff. As a new teacher I have high expectations for my students and myself as well. I have no doubts that this will be an excellent year for everyone.

This year we will cover United States History from the discovery of America, to the period of time just after the Civil War. I hope to include current events into our lessons in order to make history relevant to the present and the future. As a teacher I hope to build critical thinking skills in this particular discipline. Not only will these skills be useful in the classroom, but they also will be important in your everyday interaction.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS: please read and sign this entire packet of information and give to Mr. Kirincic by this date________________________ in order to receive points for this assignment.

THIS IS A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT!!!

Thanks for your cooperation,

Mr. Kirincic

SUPPLIES:

Pens/Pencils

Each student is required to have a pen or pencil for classroom work. Pens can be any color EXCEPT FOR RED OR GREEN!!! If a colored pen is to be used it must be easy to see. Black or blue pens are preferred.

Notebook

The students will be taking many notes this year. This notebook will be used for notes only. The notebook can be college rule or wide rule.

NOTE: Homework assignments need to be on loose leaf paper. I will not accept any homework that has been ripped out of a spiral notebook. IT MAKES TOO MUCH OF A MESS!!!

Journal

This year we will be writing in journals on a daily basis. For this reason I ask that the students have a journal that they can turn in whenever asked. Journal entries will deal with topics discussed in class or they will pertain to current events that can be incorporated into the lesson for the day.

Textbooks

The students are responsible for their own textbooks. They will be required to bring it on a daily basis unless otherwise notified. At the end of the year the student is to turn in the textbook he/she was given. I also must be returned in the condition it was given.

NOTE: If a textbook is not turned in at the end of the year in the condition it was given, a fee for the textbook will be charged to the responsible party.

Agenda Book

The school agenda book is generally issued within the first few days of school. Every student will be expected to carry this book at all times. If this book becomes lost at any time during the school year, the student will be asked to purchase another one. Mr. Kirincic will check these books periodically to ensure that the student is filling it out completely and to ensure that the student does not loose this book.

CLASSROOM POLICIES:

Homework

Homework must be turned in on the date specified by the teacher, AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS. No late work will be accepted. If a student fails to complete the assignment a zero will be given and a charger pass will be signed.

Grades

Grades can be checked online through EdEase.  Please fill in your email address below for Mr.Kirincic to add you in to the system.  Progress reports will be issued by Mr. Kirincic at the halfway point of the semester. These will be signed by the parent and returned to school.

Tardiness

A student that is not in their seat when the bell rings will have a charger pass signed.

Absentees

If a student misses class, it is the students’ responsibility to find out what they have missed via the teacher.  I will allow students one day grace period from the day of their return to turn in all missed assignments.

Raising your hand

If a student wishes to speak in class, they are required to raise their hand and wait to be called upon.  Students who speak out in class without permission cause a classroom disruption and take the risk of being punished.  Please wait your turn and respect your fellow classmates.

Assigned Seating

All students are required to stay in their seats at all times unless otherwise specified by Mr. Kirincic.

Students are required to remain in their seats until Mr. Kirincic has dismissed the class.  Failure to comply will result in the entire class staying in their seats until everyone complies.

CHARGER PASSES

Each student starts the year with one blue charger pass which has five signature lines.  A student will have their charger pass signed if he/she:

-violates the dress code

-does not have homework

-is tardy to class

-disrupts class

PLEASE NOTE:

*When five teacher signatures have been signed the blue charger pass will be sent to the office and an after school detention will be issued.

*A second charger’s pass (yellow) will be issued

A second charger’s pass containing five Block staff signatures will result in TWO After-school Detentions.

*A third Charger’s pass (pink/red) will then be issued

If the red/pink charger pass is signed with five block faculty member signatures the result will be either three after-school detentions/Saturday School/Suspension.  This will be determined by the school administration.

A lost charger pass is treated the same as a Charger’s Pass containing five Block faculty staff member signatures.  Therefore, if you have lost your first BLUE Pass sheet, you will be issued a detention and receive a YELLOW charger pass.  If you lose your YELLOW Charger Pass you will be issued two after school detentions and a PINK/RED Chargers pass will be issued.

7th Grade Science Homework and Classroom Policies of Mr. Stankovich’s

                                                General Science Classes

Our goal at Block is to help you to improve your academic skills so that you will

learn to think like scientists.

Classroom rules:

1)      Be in your seat when the bell rings!

2)      Raise your hand to speak. Otherwise, work quietly on your assignments.

3)      Talking is permitted during the lab periods.

4)      By the end of the first week of classes be prepared with your:  pen, pencil, spiral notebook, and a double pocket folder with paper. Bring  these items with you each day to class. Keep your science book at home   for homework and reading assignments. I will supply you with a science book to use each day in class.

5)      If you are absent, bring a note from home signed by your parent or guardian. If you are absent one day, you have an extra day or two days to turn in your work.

6)      Homework must be done in order to receive the laboratory   experience. You may turn in your homework one day late,   but a two letter grade penalty occurs. Students may make up  homework and labs due to excused absences before school at 8 AM.

Please see me for a morning pass.

Homework is given twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.   Turn in your homework at the start of class. Homwork is given usually on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Late homework is accepted with a two letter grade penalty.

7) No gum or candy is permitted in class.

Extra credit reports are given weekly and are due on Fridays over current topics in science.

The grading scale is as follows:

Honors 7th Grade Science Homework and Classroom Policies of Mr. Stankovich

Honors students will perform scientific research studies, participate in the Science Fair, and

learn how to use digital and analog instruments to measure biological, chemical and physical

substances.

Course Requirements:

1)       Honors students must maintain at least a “C” average in honors with no “D” or “F” grades in any six weeks grading period.

2)       Honors students must not have “U” grades in conduct.

3)       If a student is performing at a “D” or “F” level or has a “U” in conduct, I will inform the student’s parents or guardians by phone or unsatisfactory letter. The student must improve their performance before the end of the six weeks grading period. If the student doesn’t improve, the student will be removed from the honors program and placed in a general studies class.

4)       Since this is an honors program, science students are expected to perform at a higher level compared to a general studies curriculum. In each six weeks grading period, my honors students will write a research report or perform a presentation using topics from our Indiana science standards. In March, each honors student is required to have a science fair report, showboard, and experiment, this is part of our school’s annual science fair.

Classroom rules:

1)       Be in your seat when the bell rings!

2)       Raise your hand to speak. Otherwise listen and work quietly and carefully.

3)       Talking is permitted during the lab periods.

4)       By the end of the first week of classes be prepared with your: pen, pencil, book, spiral notebook, science book, and a double pocket folder with paper. Bring these items with you each day to class.

Homwork is given usually on Tuesday nights and Thursday night. Late homework is accepted with a two letter grade penalty.

7) No gum or candy is permitted in class.  Extra credit reports are given weekly and are due on Fridays over current topics in science.

The grading scale is as follows:

A = 100-90%       B = 89-80%              C = 79-70%          D = 69-60%      F = 59-0%

My grading formula is  :Lab Reports, Homework and Science Spiral Notebook  = 40%

                                         Tests and Quizzes      40%

                                         Effort/Class Participation       = 20%

Ms. Stazak's

Homework policy

The reasons I assign homework are:

to reinforce the skills and material students have learned during class.
to prepare students for upcoming lessons, topics and discussions.

The types of homework I give include assignments that:

provide review and practice of specific skills or material already covered in class (for example, textbook problems and questions).

prepare students for an upcoming lesson, topic or discussion (for example, finding newspaper articles about a specific current event).

I assign homework:

not very often.

The average homework assignment should require:

30 minutes to complete.

All homework assignments must be:

completed by students on their own to the best of their ability.
neat, clean and legible.

I will positively reinforce good homework habits by:

praising students.

When students do not complete their homework assignments I will:

lower students’ grades.

When determining report card grades, homework will:

be graded as a class assignment.

I expect parents to support my homework policy by:

making homework a top priority in their home.
Making sure that their children do homework in a quiet environment.
Giving their children encouragement and positive rewards when homework complete
Contacting me if their children are having problems with homework.

Ms. L. Stevenson

The purpose of assigning homework is to reinforce, enrich, and expand upon classroom learning. In addition, homework is designed to help students independently apply what they have learned. Homework assignments will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Homework will not be assigned during weekends, holidays, or vacations unless necessary. Homework must be turned in on the day it is due at the beginning of every class period. Homework will include any unfinished classroom work and any additional work assigned at the discretion of the teacher.

It is the individual responsibility of each student to complete the assigned homework assignments by the due date. Parents should establish and maintain a schedule and environment that allows time for studying and completing homework assignments. Homework assignments must be written in the student’s agenda book. The agenda book must be signed by the parent or guardian daily. Failure to due so will result in loss of “ready points.”

Grades will be used to measure the progress toward the expected results. My grading scale is as follows:

100 – 90 = A
80 – 89 = B
70 – 79 = C
60 – 69 = D
59 and Below = F

Homework will count for 50% of the final grade.

Remember We're a class who Enjoys working and Learning together. We Care for
One another and Make sure Everyone feels important. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!

Mrs. D. Thompson

The Reading Room Grade 7 Homework Policy Ms. Thompson, Rm. A124

Homework is intended to provide students with additional practice using the reading skills and applying the reading strategies that are taught in the class.

Daily, students are given short reading assignments that are to be completed as homework. Comprehension Check Tests are given the next school day after each reading assignment. Twice a week, exercises that focus on developing reading skills and strategies are also assigned.

In addition to being issued and explained during class, homework assignments are written on the board in the classroom. Students are responsible for writing the homework assignment in their agenda books.

Unless otherwise specified, homework is due the next school day at the beginning of the class period. Late assignments are accepted, but with a loss of points. Homework that is late due to an excused absence will not result in a loss of points.

Grades: Homework, class work, reading folder – 30%
Quizzes – 30%
Tests – 40%

Ms. A. Walker

August 2006

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I look forward to teaching and learning with all of my students and I am delighted that your child is in my English class this year. With your encouragement, your child will participate in and enjoy many rewarding experiences this academic year. In my classroom, we will pride ourselves on maintaining an atmosphere of respect and promoting positive learning experiences. I am a flexible teacher, but I do have high expectations for all of my students.

Since lifelong success depends in part on learning to make responsible choices, I have developed a classroom discipline plan that guides every student to make good decisions about his or her behavior. Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her growth, and I know that together we will make a difference in this process. The discipline plan is outlined below.

Rules:
1. Follow directions.
2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
3. No swearing, teasing, or name-calling.
4. Be in your seat BEFORE the bell begins to ring.

To encourage students to follow the rules, I will support appropriate behavior with verbal recognition, positive notes to you, and classroom rewards and privileges.

However, if a student chooses to break a rule, the following steps will be taken:

First time a student breaks a rule: Reminder
Second time: Complete a Behavior Journal sheet, to be signed by a parent/guardian
Third time: Stay one minute after class
Fourth time: Call parent/guardian
Fifth time: Student will be referred to the dean
Severe disruption: Immediate referral

Be assured that my goal is to work with you to ensure the success of your child this year. Please read and discuss this classroom plan with your child, keep the top portion for your reference, then sign and return the form below. Your child will receive points for returning the form. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this plan or any other matter. My planning period is from 2:15 to 3:05.

August 2006

Dear Parent/Guardian,

First, allow me to apologize for sending another letter home to you, and thank you so much for taking the time to read it. You have previously read my classroom discipline plan, but I would also like for you to have a good idea about how your child will earn his/her grades and what he/she will be evaluated on in my English class.

Class work
In-class work will cover a variety of topics related to English, but most of our work will be reading and writing. I will incorporate concepts as we read and write, such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, usage, etc. All work will be graded and is based on a points system. Assignments that are not turned in will earn a zero.

Homework
Homework is given several times a week (not every day) and will be due the day after it was assigned AT THE START OF CLASS. Those who fail to complete homework will receive a zero for that assignment. I will accept homework only one day late, and the student will automatically lose 20% of his/her grade. This means that if an assignment is worth 50 points, he/she will lose 10 points before the paper is even graded. A student who is absent can turn in his/her homework upon returning to school without penalty. If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to find out what was missed.

Journal
Each student must have a 70-page notebook which will serve as his/her journal. This journal will stay in the classroom and students will receive credit for it at the end of each grading period. Journal prompts will be on the board when students enter the classroom and they should get started on them right away.

Folder/Portfolio
I will be allowing the students as much choice as possible in the classroom this year. Part of this choice will be in which pieces of writing the student submits for final evaluation at the end of the semester in January. Every piece of writing completed by the student will receive points, but students will be given the choice of which pieces they want to have fully evaluated based on the Indiana Rubric for writing. This portfolio is simply a two-pocket, three-prong folder (which will remain in the classroom) and when it is turned in for full evaluation of writing, it becomes a portfolio of the student’s best work. This folder is a major part of the student’s grade and if it is not turned in to me in January, failure is almost certain for the first semester.

Extra Credit
I will give all students the opportunity to earn extra credit points throughout the school year based on activities they might do outside of the usual class work and homework. Students should take advantage of extra credit opportunities when they can, even if they don’t think they need it. It is my policy to not give extra credit just because a student realizes that he/she is failing.

Progress Reports
I issue progress reports to every student halfway through each grading period. The progress report will show the grade earned up to that point, what grades were earned on individual assignments, and whether an assignment is missing (indicated with a zero). They should be signed by you and returned the next day, as your child will receive points for it. Please look for the first progress report on either September 10 or 11.
